What is Female Pattern Hair Loss?

Hair loss problems are common to both men and women but the hair loss pattern in women might be different to that of men. Women are most likely to suffer from hair loss after menopause because of instability of hormones. Most of the women experience hair loss after 65 years of age.

Female pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia, can affect women as they grow older. In this hair loss pattern, women tend to start losing hair from certain segments of scalp making it look thinner. It is common for women to lose 50 - 100 hair a day but women with hair loss tend to lose more count of hair strands on a regular basis. Unlike as seen in men, women do not go completely bald or have receding hair line most of the time but they do suffer from heavy hair fall around the scalp, making it look thinner and bald.

There are three stages to female pattern hair loss, such as
  • Type 1- small amount of thinning around the parts
  • Type 2- thinning areas start to look wider
  • Type 3- thinning throughout the scalp

Causes of Female Pattern Hair Loss
  • Female hair loss pattern can occur due to hormonal imbalance after menopause or it could be hereditary.
  • Pollution also plays its part in making hair lose its strength.
  • Other well-known causes of hair loss are iron deficiency which is common in women, thyroid disorder and stress, etc.
  • Women also subject their hair to a lot of treatments like styling, colouring or chemical treatment which make hair weak and easy prey to hair fall problems.

Consultation with a Dermatologist is necessary!

Consultation from a dermatologist is advised at the early signs of hair loss. Doctors perform blood test to ascertain the cause of hair fall, so that they can provide the best treatment available; some of these treatments are medication like Rogaine or Minoxidil, PRP Therapy and Hair Transplant
If hair fall is less, then medication or PRP therapy can be opted for but if hair loss is significant, then hair transplant is the best option. However, the number of women opting for hair transplant Surgery is very less as compared to men. Hair transplant is a surgical solution to gain new hair growth in a period of 8 - 10 months with natural-looking and long-lasting hair. This procedure uses hair follicles extracted from the back of the patient’s head to be implanted to the balding/thinning areas.

The best solution to prevent female hair loss problems is to take good care of your hair. Some things to be kept in mind are:
  • Eat healthy & nutritious food because balanced diet helps in preventing hair from breakage.
  • Avoid unnecessary, heavy hair treatments that may cause damage to your hair.
  • Cover your head while going out to prevent your hair from pollution and direct sunlight.
  • Avoid stress/depression and indulge yourself into meditation, yoga or exercise.
Because prevention is better than cure!
